Nunes allowed that he enjoys events in his congressional district, such as a reception scheduled for today in Visalia, but the Washington events are strictly business. Wherever the money comes from, he often redistributes it among his colleagues. "My goal is to get the Republicans back into the majority," Nunes said, adding that "we are always running a campaign operation, 365 days a year."

Given that the Rasmussen poll in question had some data that hinted at a GOP skew (the 55% job approval for President Obama, for example), the news on the Senate race has to be considered very good news for Democratic Senator Barbara Boxer. In the new Rasmussen poll, she leads both of her likely Republican challengers (Carly Fiorina and Chuck DeVore) by nearly identical margins. She leads Fiorina by nine (46-37) and leads Devore by a ten-point margin (49-39).

Maybe it was Washington's cold and rainy weather. Maybe it was the Saturday work sessions (one down, one to go tomorrow). But for whatever reason, leaders in Washington have been in one foul mood all week, with the result being an unusually ugly round of bipartisan barbs flying across Capitol Hill. But rather than lament the lack of civility, the Capitolist presents you with our first-ever awards for the top insults hurled between and about lawmakers in Washington. --

With all due respect, the Attorney General does not have a clue.   -John Cornyn

The Republican answer to Sen. Barbara Boxer says she would not be alive today if she followed the mammograms guideline put out by the U.S. Preventive Task Force. The government-appointed panel of medical experts said earlier this week that it no longer recommends routine mammograms and breast self-exams for women under 50. And women over the mid-century mark only need to undergo the preventative measure every other year.

The right overreached. After pressuring Republican nominee Dede Scozzafava out of the race with charges that she was too liberal, conservative activists watched New York's 23rd District go to a Democrat for the first time in more than a century. Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who had endorsed Scozzafava and warned Republicans not to "purge the party of anybody who doesn't agree with us 100 percent," appeared to be vindicated.

The lesson of New York 23 is that if the Republican Party nominates people who are Republicans in name only, they are going to meet conservative opposition   -Tom Minnery

The corporate glass ceiling remains firmly in place at companies based in California, according to a study released Wednesday. The University of California, Davis study found women account for about 10 percent of executives and board members at the 400 largest publicly traded companies headquartered in California. The findings have changed little since the first survey in 2005.

Unfortunately, we've seen virtually no progress   -Steven Currall

New numbers from Scott Rasmussen for the state of California has Barbara Boxer stuck at 46%, but still with a double-digit lead over the top two Republicans. I continue my plea to California Republicans, please pick anyone besides Carly Fiorina. I am still trying to wake up from the speech she gave at the 2008 convention.
